What is inverted nipple correction surgery?
This surgery is a simple procedure that will correct an inverted nipple so that it protrudes.
Am I a good candidate for inverted nipple correction surgery?
If one or both of your nipples are inverted and this bothers you then this procedure might help you. If your nipple inversion is new then it might indicate a medical problem and you should see your G.P. prior to considering surgery. Due to the nature of this surgery subsequent breast feeding is usually not possible. Our surgeons will advise you to consider the non-surgical options to treat nipple inversion before thinking about surgery.
Safety
This is generally regarded as a safe procedure. As with all surgery there are risks which we will discuss in detail during your consultation.
Before your consultation
Bring details of your medical history and medications with you. Medical problems and medication can have an impact on surgery and it is essential that we are thorough with this.
Your surgeon will discuss why you want this procedure and what you expect to gain from it. You will also be asked about your general health. A breast examination will be performed and we will address your specific needs and concerns. The post-operative recovery period, benefits, alternatives to achieve your desired outcome and risks of surgery will also be discussed.
How inverted nipple correction surgery works
Inverted nipple correction can be done under local anaesthetic (where only the nipple and surrounding area are numb) or general anaesthetic (where you will be asleep).
The operation on both nipples takes around 40 minutes. A small incision is made at the base of the nipple and the nipple released.
Absorbable stitches are passed through the base of the newly everted nipple to help support it. Dressings will be applied to help support the newly protruding nipple and left in place for 2 weeks.
Recovery from inverted nipple correction surgery
After a short period of monitoring you will be able to go home. It is normal to have discomfort in the first few weeks. Your nipples will naturally swell and will appear more prominent initially although this will settle with time.
