What is revision breast surgery?
Secondary breast surgery involves operating on a patient who has had a previous breast procedure. Revision surgery is a type of secondary surgery that involves improving the result of the original procedure. Our surgeons frequently perform secondary breast surgery.
Revision breast surgery typically involves correcting or improving the results of a previous breast augmentation or reconstruction. Common reasons for this include patients wishing to change implant size or those who have a problem after previous breast augmentation surgery. Some patients wish to have their implants removed and not replaced, this procedure is often combined with an uplift. include:
- Capsular Contracture: This is when scar tissue forms around the implant, causing hardness or distortion. For instance, if a patient has experienced discomfort or changes in breast shape due to this, a surgeon might remove the capsule and replace the implant.
- Implant Size Change: Sometimes, patients want to change the size of their implants. For example, a woman who initially opted for larger implants may later decide to downsize for a more natural look.
- Implant Malposition: Implants can shift over time, leading to unevenness. A revision surgery might involve repositioning the implants to restore symmetry.
- Aesthetic Changes: As bodies change, some may wish to adjust the shape or profile of their breasts. For instance, if a patient feels their implants appear outdated or unnatural, a surgeon can recommend newer implant types or alternative techniques.

Am I a good candidate for revision breast surgery?
If you have previously had surgery on your breasts and aren’t happy with their appearance or are worried about your implants then secondary surgery might be for you.
Safety
Secondary breast surgery is generally safe. However, it is important you know that this type of surgery carries more risks and is often more complicated than the original procedure as you will have scarring from previous surgery and altered anatomy. The risks will depend on the exact operation that you have.
Before your consultation
The consultation will be personalised to your needs. Your surgeon will discuss why you want secondary surgery and what you expect to gain from it. You will also be asked about your general health and we look at any information you have with regards to your previous surgery. A breast examination will be performed to assess the health of your breasts and multiple measurements will be taken. We will decide whether we can help you and if so, discuss the alternatives and risks of surgery in detail. If you are aged 40 or above and have not had a mammogram in the preceding 12 months you will be advised to have one prior to surgery.
