What is revision breast surgery?
Secondary breast surgery involves operating on a patient who has had a previous breast procedure. Revision surgery is a type of secondary surgery that involves improving the result of the original procedure. Our surgeons frequently perform secondary breast surgery. Common reasons for this include patients wishing to change implant size or those who have a problem after previous breast augmentation surgery. Some patients wish to have their implants removed and not replaced, this procedure is often combined with an uplift.
Am I a good candidate for revision breast surgery?
If you have previously had surgery on your breasts and aren’t happy with their appearance or are worried about your implants then secondary surgery might be for you.
Safety
Secondary breast surgery is generally safe. However, it is important you know that this type of surgery carries more risks and is often more complicated than the original procedure as you will have scarring from previous surgery and altered anatomy. The risks will depend on the exact operation that you have.
Before your consultation
The consultation will be personalised to your needs. Your surgeon will discuss why you want secondary surgery and what you expect to gain from it. You will also be asked about your general health and we look at any information you have with regards to your previous surgery. A breast examination will be performed to assess the health of your breasts and multiple measurements will be taken. We will decide whether we can help you and if so, discuss the alternatives and risks of surgery in detail. If you are aged 40 or above and have not had a mammogram in the preceding 12 months you will be advised to have one prior to surgery.
