Breast Enlargement
What is breast enlargement?
Breast enlargement is also known as breast augmentation and is often referred to as a “boob job”. It is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures performed. The procedure enlarges your breasts and is usually performed with an implant. It typically takes 60 minutes and is performed while you are asleep (general anaesthetic).
Am I a good candidate for Breast enlargement?
Breast enlargement increases the size and fullness of your breasts and is most suited to those who are troubled by:
- naturally small breasts
- “empty” breasts after having a baby or weight loss
- breasts that are different sizes (asymmetry).
Breast surgery is not a decision to be taken lightly and you must not go ahead with it if you feel pressured to do so. It is your decision alone and you must take time to reflect on it.
Breast enlargement alone is not suitable for all shapes of breasts. After a thorough consultation your surgeon will be able to advise you on your suitability for surgery and the most appropriate procedure based on your desired outcome.
Safety
Breast augmentation with silicone implants is considered safe but as with all surgery there are risks which will be discussed in detail during your consultation. Your surgeon will also advise on the longevity of the implant and the need for further surgery in the future.
Before your consultation
How breast enlargement works
A small cut is placed in the crease underneath your breast. Space for the implant is created either in front or behind the chest muscle and the implant is inserted. The incisions are closed with absorbable stitches and dressings are applied. A post-surgical bra will be put on for you.
Recovery from breast enlargement
Our team will monitor you while you wake up from anaesthetic and ensure that you are comfortable. Once you are awake you will usually be allowed home on the same day providing a responsible adult can collect you and stay with you.
It is normal to have soreness and swelling for the first few weeks after surgery. Regular simple painkillers, sitting upright and a cold press (e.g. frozen peas) can help with the initial discomfort. You will be advised to wear your post-surgical support bra night and day for 4 weeks and then at night only for a further 2 weeks.
You will be able to perform light exercise after two weeks but should avoid strenuous exercise (e.g upper body weights and running) for at least 6 weeks.
It is normal for each breast to heal at different rates and you should not expect to achieve your final result until 6 months after surgery.
