    What is a fat transfer?

Fat transfer (also called fat grafting or lipofilling) is the process of taking fat from another area of the body (usually tummy or hips) and placing it into the breast with the aim of improving the appearance. Our surgeons have had rigorous training in this technique.

Am I a good candidate for a fat transfer?

If you wish to increase the size of your breasts without an implant then you may be suitable for this procedure. It is important you know that you cannot increase the size of your breasts in one operation as much as you can with an implant so you may need multiple procedures if you choose to have fat transfer alone. If you have breast defects after previous surgery or have certain problems after breast augmentation (e.g. rippling) then this procedure may also help you.

    Safety

Fat transfer is generally a safe procedure. As with all plastic surgery the procedure carries risks which we will discuss in detail with you during your consultation.

    Before your consultation

This procedure is not recommended if you are a smoker or are actively dieting around the time of surgery. Please bring details of your medical history and medications with you. Medical problems and medication can have an impact on surgery and it is essential that we are thorough with this.

As well as a detailed history and breast examination we will also need to check whether there is an appropriate amount of fat at the donor sites (i.e. where we take the fat from). We will address your specific needs and concerns. The post-operative recovery period, benefits, alternatives to achieve your desired outcome and risks of surgery will also be discussed. If you are aged 40 or above and have not had a mammogram in the preceding 12 months you will be advised to have one prior to surgery.

Please gather and bring any medical history information that you have.  Medical problems and medication can affect surgery and your recovery and it is essential that we are thorough with this.

If you have recently breastfed, we will recommend postponing surgery until 6 months after you have stopped.

Bring a sports bra and tight-fitting top with you.  This will help us when we use the implant sizers.

Your own fat is taken, prepared in specialist equipment and then deposited into the required area of the breast under general anaesthesia (patient asleep). The procedure takes approximately 45 – 60 minutes.

    Recovery from a fat transfer

Wearing supportive garments for the first few weeks after surgery can help your recovery. You will have an early wound check and should not exercise for 2 weeks after surgery. We will then see you back at 3 months after surgery to assess your results and plan any further procedures.
