What is Breast Enlargement?

Understanding Breast Enlargement Surgery

Breast enlargement, also known as breast augmentation, is one of the most popular cosmetic breast procedures available. Using high-quality breast implants, the procedure can increase breast volume, improve shape and create a more balanced appearance.

Patients choose breast enlargement for many different reasons. Some naturally have smaller breasts and would like greater fullness, while others experience volume loss following pregnancy, breastfeeding or weight changes. The procedure can also be used to improve breast symmetry when one breast is noticeably different in size or shape.

At ART Breast, every treatment plan is tailored to the individual. During your consultation, implant size, shape, profile and placement will be carefully discussed to ensure results complement your natural anatomy and personal goals.

The most natural-looking results come from selecting implants that complement a patient's existing anatomy rather than simply focusing on size.

What happens during surgery?

Your Breast Enlargement Procedure

Breast enlargement surgery is typically performed under general anaesthetic and usually takes between 60 and 90 minutes.

Before surgery, careful planning is undertaken to determine the most appropriate implant size, shape and placement. During the procedure, a small incision is made, most commonly within the breast crease, although alternative incision locations may be suitable depending on the treatment plan.

The implant is then positioned either partially beneath the chest muscle or directly behind the breast tissue. The most appropriate placement depends on your anatomy, existing breast tissue and the aesthetic result you wish to achieve.

Once the implants are in position, the incisions are carefully closed and supportive dressings are applied. Patients are normally able to return home later the same day with detailed aftercare instructions and ongoing support from the clinical team.

Breast enlargement is about proportion, not just size. We take time to find an implant that looks and feels right for your body.

Recovery

Recovery & Aftercare

Recovery following breast enlargement surgery varies between individuals, although most patients can return home on the day of surgery and resume light daily activities within a few days.

During the first week, it is normal to experience swelling, tightness and mild discomfort. These symptoms gradually improve as healing progresses. A supportive post-surgical bra is typically recommended to help reduce swelling and support the implants during recovery.

Most patients can return to office-based work within one to two weeks, depending on the nature of their role. Heavy lifting, strenuous exercise and upper-body workouts should generally be avoided for four to six weeks.

Breasts often continue to settle over several months as swelling resolves and implants soften into their final position. Regular follow-up appointments allow healing to be monitored and provide an opportunity to discuss any questions throughout the recovery process.

Rest and take any prescribed medication. Wear your supportive bra day and night as instructed.

Weeks 2–6

Patients can return to light exercise. Avoid lifting or strenuous exercise.

Important Information

Risks & Considerations

All surgical procedures carry potential risks and breast enlargement is no exception. During your consultation, the benefits, limitations and risks of treatment will be discussed in detail to ensure you can make an informed decision.

Potential risks include bleeding, infection, delayed wound healing, changes in nipple sensation, implant rupture, implant displacement and capsular contracture, a condition where scar tissue forms around the implant and causes firmness or distortion.

Breast implants are not lifetime devices and some patients may require additional surgery in the future for implant replacement or revision. Maintaining realistic expectations and choosing an experienced breast surgery specialist are important factors in achieving a successful outcome.

A thorough consultation and personalised treatment plan help minimise risks while ensuring the procedure is appropriate for your individual circumstances.

Scarring

All incisions leave a permanent scar. Typically placed in discreet locations, scars fade significantly over 12 to 18 months with proper care.

Changes in sensation

Temporary or, sometimes, permanent changes to nipple or breast sensation can occur following surgery.

Implants are not lifetime devices

Breast implants are not lifetime devices and patients should expect to need further surgery in the future to replace or remove them. Implant-related complications such as capsular contracture, rupture, displacement or rippling can also occur and are usually manageable with further treatment.

Infection

A small risk with any surgery. Minimised through strict sterile technique and appropriate antibiotic cover.

Anaesthetic risks

General anaesthetic carries its own risks, discussed in full with your anaesthetist prior to surgery.

Asymmetry

Perfect symmetry is not always achievable. Minor differences in size, shape or position can occur.
Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions

Modern breast implants are durable, but they are not lifetime devices. Implant replacement or removal is almost guaranteed in the future, so further surgery should be expected in the years ahead.

A natural-looking result depends on careful implant selection, surgical technique and individual anatomy. During your consultation, implant options are chosen to complement your body shape and desired outcome.

Yes. Breast enlargement can often improve differences in breast size and shape. In some cases, additional procedures may be recommended to achieve optimal symmetry.

Most women that successfully breast fed before surgery can breast feed after breast enlargement surgery. However, breastfeeding can never be guaranteed because many factors influence milk production. If future breastfeeding is important to you, we will discuss this during your consultation.

Most patients return to office-based work within one to two weeks, although physically demanding occupations may require a longer recovery period.

Light walking is encouraged soon after surgery, but strenuous exercise and upper-body workouts should typically be avoided for six weeks.

Implant selection is highly individual and depends on your anatomy, lifestyle and desired result. During consultation, different implant options will be discussed in detail.

All surgery results in some scarring. Incisions are carefully planned and placed in discreet locations wherever possible, and scars usually fade significantly over time.

Modern breast implants have an excellent safety record and are subject to rigorous testing and regulation. As Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeons, we discuss the benefits and the recognised short and long term risks, including capsular contracture, implant rupture, and the rare association with breast implant-associated cancers. Implant selection is individualised to your anatomy and goals, with patient safety at the centre of every decision.

You will notice an immediate increase in volume after surgery, but final results typically develop over six months or more as swelling settles and the implants soften into position.

We are not limited to a single implant manufacturer. Implant selection is based on your breast dimensions, tissue characteristics and aesthetic goals. We will recommend the implant we believe is best suited to you. We frequently use POLYTECH Health & Aesthetics implants because their extensive range of shapes, sizes and technologies provides exceptional flexibility for individualised planning. However, we also have access to the full range of breast implants available in the UK and will discuss all appropriate options during your consultation.

Our priority is not promoting a particular brand, but selecting the right implant for you.
