Breast Implants Under the Muscle
When undergoing breast augmentation surgery, one option for implant placement is “under” the chest muscle. This can either be fully under the chest muscle (submuscular) or partly under the chest muscle (known as dual plane). Here are some key points about breast implants placed under the muscle:
The implants are positioned beneath the main chest muscle (pectoralis major). Some of the advantages are that is gives a more natural looking breast shape and also that it reduces the risk of rippling. It is often recommended for thin patients because the muscle provides an additional layer of cover over the implant. The technique, however, does have some disadvantages such as distortion of the implant when the pectoralis muscle contracts (this is known as animation).
Every patient is unique so consulting with an appropriately qualified surgeon will help you decide on the most suitable implant placement for you.
