How breast enlargement is done

Breast enlargement, also known as breast augmentation or augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure that involves increasing the size and enhancing the shape of a woman'sbreasts. There are different methods for breast enlargement, and the most common approach involves the use of breast implants.

Fat transfer breast enlargement is less common and can give a more subtle breast enhancement. The process of breast enlargement using breast implants is outlined below:

  1. Consultation: Before undergoing breast enlargement, a consultation with a qualified
surgeon is essential. During this consultation, the surgeon will discuss your
goals, medical history, and expectations. They will also assess your overall
health to determine if you are a suitable candidate for the procedure.
  2. Choosing Implants: You and your surgeon will discuss the type of breast implants to be used. Implants are typically filled with saline or silicone gel. The choice between these options depends on factors such as personal preference, body type, and desired outcome. The surgeon will also help you decide on the size and shape of the implants based on your goals and anatomy.
  3. Anaesthesia: Breast enlargement is usually performed under general anaesthesia, ensuring that you are asleep and feel no pain during the surgery. In select cases, it can be performed under local anaesthesia whilst you are awake.
  4. Incision Placement: The surgeon makes an incision to create a pocket for the breast implants. Incisions can be made in different locations, such as under the breast (inframammary), around the nipple (periareolar), or in the armpit (transaxillary). The choice of incision placement depends on factors like the patient's anatomy, patient’s preference and type of implant.
  5. Implant Placement: The surgeon inserts the breast implants into the created pockets. Implants can be placed either under the chest muscle (submuscular), directly behind the breast tissue (subglandular) or behind the breast tissue, above the muscle but below the connective tissue covering of the muscle (subfascial). The optimal placement depends on factors such as the amount of natural breast tissue, body type, and the desired outcome.
  6. Closing Incisions: After placing the implants, the surgeon closes the incisions using sutures or surgical tape. The incision lines are carefully planned to minimize scarring. Absorbable skin sutures (stitch material) is used.
  7. Recovery: After the surgery, patients are monitored in a recovery area before being released to go home. Recovery time varies, but patients are typically advised to avoid strenuous activities for six weeks and follow the surgeon's post- operative care instructions. It's important to note that breast enlargement is a surgical procedure with potential risks and complications. Patients should thoroughly discuss these aspects with their surgeon andensure they have realistic expectations about the outcomes. It's also crucial to choose a qualified and experienced surgeon to minimise the risks associated with the procedure.
